Frame Making Course

Learn how to do it yourself!

 

These courses are designed for you to enhance your knowledge as an Optician by learning the creative and practical processes of frame making.

 Learn the steps of frame making and  design in detail and finish the course with a frame made by you!  You will be required to bring some tools with you.  These are basic tools that are necessary for frame creation and for you to continue frame making when you leave here.  Invest in your tools and invest in your future!  These tools will stay with you your entire optical career.

Continue on to the advanced 300 level course and learn how to make a frame out of buffalo horn.  Learn how to work with buffalo horn frames and ways you can sell buffalo horn in your store too!

COURSE OUTLINE:

 

FRAME MAKING 100 (16 hours over 8 weeks)

  • Making some of your own tools
  • Characteristics of the human face—what to watch out for when designing a frame
  • Bringing a design idea onto paper.  How to make a sketch
  • Choosing a material piece and features of acetate
  • Basic Hardware & Tools
  • Cutting out the front part and temples
  • Filing, sandpapering and polishing
  • Adding a bevel and hinges
  • The final adjustment

 

FRAME MAKING 200 (11 hours over 5 weeks)

  • Adding nose pad arms
  • Modifying full frames into nylor mount frames
  • Rimless design
  • Various decorative lens elements
  • Lamination of acetate materials to achieve different color options
  • Adding decorative elements to acetate frames

 

FRAME MAKING 300 - BUFFALO HORN (18 hours over 9 weeks)

(Frame Making 100 and 200 are required as a prerequisite)

  • Features of Buffalo Horn
  • Sketching your design
  • Choosing a material piece
  • Cutting the front part and temples
  • Filing, sandpapering and polishing
  • Adding a bevel and hinges
